i was talking to a friend the other day about blogging. she has a great one and i am glad to have found it. 5 o’clock crows, it’s a mixture of fiber art, process, and a conversation about art. check it out. i read blogs but have very little call to write about what i think is good or the next best design. of course i have opinions on the matter but really can’t see why i need to be another voice in the ether. i appreciate what the others are writing……mostly. and so this is the place where i post new projects, inspirations, and other ephemera that i think should be seen or read about.

2nd exhibit for the Enterprising Maiden/Old Maid deck! BookOpolis 2009, Asheville, NC. See the post about it at Ladies of Letterpress. Thanks Jessica (Heroes and Criminals Press) for hand delivering the deck and making a great display!
The Old Maid Deck exhibited! and a silly picture of me talking about it at Looking @ Art, Culture Candy’s cool little program. Thanks Elise Toups for the pic! (she’s also an artist, see her nice nice paintings here.) And to see a preview of the Baton Rouge Gallery exhibit check out this video type thing accompanied by some upbeat surf music. If you don’t know my work, it’s the stuff that looks either printmaking or papercut.
The title card….Old Maid cards- Enterprising Maidens. So, yeah we changed the name of Old Maid, because we could. This is the title/colophon card for the deck. It is hand set type (all of it…. thanks for Rebecca for setting a bunch of the name list) Caslon OS (ran out of p’s and e’s so the name list took 2 runs-oh the beauty and patience of letterpress), lino cut, Lettra. Short explanation. There are a couple of cards still out there, but this is it it for the most part. This has been an amazing project. All participants made fantastic cards. It is truly a special deck. 32 characters + the Enterprising Maiden card. More photos of the deck in it’s first public exhibition coming soon. (you may be able to see a quick shot of it at this link later today). But I will post good pics soon.
And here she is……. The Old Maid card, a card so powerful there needs to be just one. But I changed the name because Susan B Anthony was no old maid. She kicked butt and made a difference. She is The ENTERPRISING MAIDEN. (thanks again Celene for the suggestion) And as it says (I thought if I was printing the card I could change the rules… ;) if you draw this card you win! Susan was a winner, that’s for sure. This was printed on a C&P OS 8x12, hand set type-Caslon OS & Kaufmann bold, linocut on Lettra pearl white.
Old Maid cards- Camille Robin- Fish Lake Press- Pollyanna Printser. Camille’s description reads “Pollyanna is an old book written in the 40s about a girl who wanted everything to turn out great for everyone and who always had a good thing to say- I guess she was one of the original optimists? Printser/Printer….Printser-a take off on spinster…Printer-yesterday I couldn’t spell printer now I are one (an old saying from the 70s). The halftone used is a self portrait of Clara McClean, printed on a 10x15 Heidelberg windmill. The foil stamping was done on a table top Kensol/Franklin. The type was hand set foundry type which I believe is 12 pt Broadway.”
Winding down, but still a few left. Old Maid cards- Jessie Hornbrook- Steely Sally, Professional Player. The scanner did not do these justice so had to take a photo, that silver paper is awesome!
Old Maid cards- Leanne McClurg Cambric- Canine Corrine, who needs a man when you’ve got a dog? 2 color lino reduction
