confluence, solo show @lemieuxgallerie, install part 1

I honestly don’t know who reads this blog (except for my dear friend Barbara), nor do I consider myself a blogger per se. But this serves as a space to share things that inspire me and give a little peek into the things we do in the printshop, studio, or out in the world. This last week I installed work in my first solo show in New Orleans. Besides being a letterpress printer/designer, I make work that shows in galleries in the fine art world. Sometimes the images cross over into my letterpress work and sometimes the letterpress work crosses over into the fine art. It can be fun to see what happens. I often don’t see the obvious connection until after the work is hanging or installed. I very much buy into the idea of chance, the subconscious, and efficiency in art making. Not in that order and not always any of those things (especially efficiency). But you’ll often see paper cuts, printmaking, and also mixed media, thread, and powder coated, laser cut steel.

LeMieux Galleries is located on Julia St in New Orlean’s arts district. On Thursday the installation of the show began. So here I will show a peek of the work and the process, from stuff strewn on the floor, the tedious nailing of 120 raindrops, and some things that make it to the wall. I apologize for the low res photos, better photos to come…

Thanks to Christy, for all leveling and gridding of all the raindrops.

raccoons up close….

at blackbird, we letterpress print and die cut these bear hug cards, so here’s a cross over of the bears in fine art land, here they are cut out of security envelopes with hand drawn faces, hugging various images.

many pelicans….. can’t get them out of my head these days

As far as what this is all about… confluence is “a flowing or meeting together; a joining.” From the floor of the sea, up to the clouds, confluence comments visually on animal and human relationships: interaction/interference, their subtle links of life, the love, hate, and disregard of the other.  Through the use of printmaking, paper cutting, and mixed media, the work reflects on the patterning of life, interdependence, autonomy, and the narrative between the two worlds.

The opening is Saturday March 12, 6-8pm, come out and visit if you can. The show runs until April 16. There’s more that isn’t shown here so come by and see! And thanks for looking…

It’s Mardi Gras weekend here in south Louisiana. It’s a rainy day and instead of indulging in the carnival this year, I’m taking my first day off in over two months, watching the rain, reflecting on art, and loving on the dogs. Happy Mardi Gras everybody!

Uppercase issue #8-Letterpress sampler

what a delight! Uppercase issue #8 has arrived. The exciting aspect of this issue is that it’s the Letterpress Sampler issue! Along with over 4 dozen printers, we contributed 100 pieces. Each issue holds a letterpress piece inside. So exciting. In my issue I found the wonderful Heart Fish Press’s LOVE print. Janice of papier valise/scissors variations (you can also find her here) was at the first Thursday opening at Uppercase to see all the submissions on display. Below is one of our submissions (true love) along with the same print I found in my very own issue.

Thanks Janice for letting me share your photos. Look for you copy of Uppercase today! (or you can order it here) Yay for beautifully printed magazines full of the curious and creative!

Lately the mail has been very good to me, and today I received this amazing card from Kysenia of Thomas Printers. A wonderful new year’s wish. And the card, well, it’s just fantastic and 5 colors! To be in this letterpress of a world, the inspiration just keeps coming…
